As the Trump administration attacks public education and student rights, California’s students and families refuse to be silenced. The California Partnership for the Future of Learning (CA PFL) and its allies offered space for families, youth, and educators to speak boldly about these attacks, share what they need to feel safe and supported, and articulate their vision for public schools rooted in safety, inclusivity, and belonging. Their message is clear: policymakers, school and district leaders must partner with California’s students and families to defend and advance our progressive vision of public education.

This report shares findings from more than 1,840 Californians across 12 counties, who participated in CA PFL’s 2025 Listening Campaign. Responses came through surveys, interviews, and community conversations hosted by 23 community-based organizations and networks, rooted in relationship-based practices like one-on-ones, small groups, and multilingual listening sessions. This process ensured that families, students, and educators from diverse racial, cultural, and regional backgrounds shaped the findings presented here.

The California Partnership for the Future of Learning surveyed students, families, educators, and organizers to deeply understand:
1) their hopes, dreams & aspirations
2) what makes students & families feel safe, supported & connected
3) concerns & barriers
4) how to protect & improve public education

This groundbreaking statewide effort—spanning urban, suburban, and rural schools—captured authentic perspectives from California's youth and families, providing clear direction for building more inclusive and effective public schools.
